Kodiak weather can be unpredictable at times, but nevertheless
does follow some measured patterns. In summer the temperature rarely
gets above 70 degrees and in winter it seldom drops below 25 degrees.
Rain or mist is almost a constant, but there are sunny dry days
as well. Fog is a factor and so is the wind. The best rule of thumb
in visiting Kodiak is to be prepared and to be flexible.
AVERAGE CLIMATE CONDITIONS:
Average Highs:
May - July: 38 - 60 degrees
August - September: 61 - 56 degrees
October - March: 47 - 38 degrees
GEAR LISTS:
Fishing
Spin or bait casting rods 7' to 9' that are medium weight work
well for general all purpose fishing; and those that taper with
sensitive tips will work even better. For fly fishing, a 7 wt rod
is best all around. You can go lighter in either category dependent
upon skill level and thrill of the fight. If King Salmon is your
quarry increase your spinning rod to heavyweight status, or go up
in your fly rod to a 9 wt. Deep sea tackle is furnished on all charters
at sea.
Match your reels with your rods in all circumstances. Lighter
fish like Pinks and dollies will fight well with 8 lb test. Reds,
Chums, and Silvers require 14 to 17 lb test, and Kings should be
brought in at 20 lb test. Fishing tackle is always an individual
decision; there are excellent sporting stores right in town less
11 miles from the lodge to satisfy any visiting angler.
Hunting
Good rain gear is a must at any time of the year. So is a good
pair of hip, waist, or chest waders. Insulated waders are advised
dependent upon the time of year. Layers of clothing is always the
norm in Alaska, and because of that a quality backpack should always
be included in your planning. Neoprene or lined gloves, and wool
socks, should accompany you during the cooler months.
